The Trust Company of North Carolina: Accessibility-First Development in a Regulated Industry

Client: The Trust Company of North Carolina
Industry: Wealth Management / Financial Services
Timeline: January 2023
Services: Custom WordPress Development, WCAG AA Accessibility, Performance Optimization, Technical SEO

The Challenge

The Trust Company of North Carolina operates in one of the most tightly regulated corners of financial services, where a website has to do more than look credible — it has to hold up to scrutiny. Their existing site did neither well. Built on templates and weighed down by plugin bloat, it was slow to load and inflexible to work with.

The deeper issue was accessibility. For a financial firm, an inaccessible website is a double liability: it excludes clients who rely on assistive technology, and it exposes the firm to the digital compliance risk that regulated industries increasingly face. Accessibility couldn’t be a checkbox at the end of the project. It had to be the standard the site was built to.

The Approach

  • A bespoke WordPress theme replaced the template stack. Cutting out plugin bloat optimized database efficiency and dropped load times significantly — and gave complete control over the markup, which is precisely what serious accessibility work requires.
  • WCAG AA compliance as a primary pillar, not a patch. Accessible patterns were engineered into the theme itself: semantic structure, keyboard navigability, proper contrast, and assistive-technology-friendly components throughout.
  • Third-party validation. The site’s WCAG AA compliance was verified with independent third-party audit tooling rather than self-assessed — the difference between claiming accessibility and demonstrating it.
  • A bulletproof technical SEO foundation completed the rebuild, maximizing search visibility on the same clean, semantic architecture that powers the accessibility work.

The Results

The rebuild turned a sluggish, template-dependent site into an inclusive, high-speed marketing asset. Load times dropped significantly, WCAG AA compliance was achieved and independently validated, digital compliance risk was eliminated rather than managed, and the technical SEO foundation put the firm’s search visibility on solid ground.

Key Takeaways

Accessibility and SEO are the same discipline underneath. Semantic HTML, logical structure, and clean markup serve screen readers and search crawlers alike. Building for one properly means you’ve largely built for both.

In regulated industries, validation matters as much as compliance. Independent third-party verification turns an accessibility claim into an accessibility fact — the version a compliance officer can actually rely on.

Custom code is what makes AA achievable. Template and plugin markup you don’t control is markup you can’t make accessible. Owning every element of the theme is what made top-tier compliance possible.
