TBG Homes: 200% Organic Traffic Growth in 5 Months

Client: TBG Homes
Industry: Custom Home Building
Timeline: 5 months post-launch
Services: Custom WordPress Development, SEO Architecture, Performance Optimization, Domain Migration, AI Optimization

The Challenge

TBG Homes is a custom home builder serving two distinct Alabama markets — Tuscaloosa (Central Alabama) and Athens (North Alabama). Despite a strong reputation and clear market differentiators, their website wasn’t working for them.

Their existing site at thebuildersgroup.info had several compounding problems:

  • A mobile PageSpeed score of 31/100, well below competitive thresholds
  • No ability for the client to edit or update content independently
  • Navigation that failed to guide visitors toward contact or conversion
  • No meaningful search engine visibility or keyword presence
  • A generic presentation that failed to communicate what makes TBG Homes different from competitors

The business was growing, but the website was a liability rather than an asset.

The Approach

Custom WordPress Development

Rather than adapting a pre-built theme or page builder, I built a hand-coded custom WordPress theme from the ground up. This decision was deliberate: page builders introduce bloat, limit semantic control, and create ceilings on both performance and SEO capability.

The custom build included:

  • Custom post types for Communities, Floor Plans, and Available Homes
  • Advanced filtering for the floor plan and inventory libraries
  • Separate contact forms tailored to different buyer segments and markets
  • API integration with TBG’s internal construction tracking systems
  • Full content management capability the client could use independently

Performance Optimization

With a baseline mobile score of 31/100, performance was the first priority. Optimizations included:

  • Converting all images to WebP format with fallbacks and lazy loading
  • Eliminating render-blocking resources and deferring non-critical JavaScript
  • Inlining critical CSS for above-the-fold content
  • Implementing object caching, browser caching, and a CDN via Cloudflare
  • Database query optimization and automated cleanup

SEO and AI-Ready Architecture

Modern search visibility requires more than keyword placement. I built the site’s architecture to be legible to both traditional search crawlers and AI-powered search tools like Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity.

This included:

Structured Data (Schema Markup): Organization, LocalBusiness, Product, and FAQPage schemas implemented at the code level — not as an afterthought — with distinct schemas for each Alabama market location.

Entity Optimization: Consistent co-occurrence of TBG Homes alongside location names, service descriptions, and market context throughout the site, building a clear entity relationship for search engines to map.

FAQ-Rich Content: Key service and process pages include structured FAQ sections formatted for direct answers — optimized for featured snippets and AI citations.

Semantic HTML5: Proper use of semantic elements and heading hierarchy throughout, giving AI engines clear signals about content structure and relationships.

Domain Migration

Moving from thebuildersgroup.info to tbghomesal.com carried real SEO risk. I managed the transition with a documented redirect plan covering every existing URL, comprehensive 301 redirects, updated internal linking, and daily monitoring during the first week post-launch. No rankings were lost in the transition.

Content and Market Differentiation

TBG Homes serves two geographically and demographically distinct buyer markets. The site architecture reflects that — with separate community pages, location-specific available homes, and market-targeted messaging for Central and North Alabama.

The brand story — that TBG was founded specifically to make home building less stressful — was made central to the homepage and process pages rather than buried. This provided a clear, authentic differentiator in a market where competitors default to price and square footage.

Key Takeaways

Performance is an SEO investment. The 177% improvement in mobile speed wasn’t just a user experience win — it was a direct contributor to search ranking gains.

Custom development removes ceilings. Page builders create constraints on performance, semantic structure, and schema integration. Custom code allowed optimization at every layer.

AI search requires deliberate architecture. Structured data, entity consistency, and direct-answer content aren’t future-proofing — they’re delivering measurable visibility now.

Domain migrations don’t have to cost you. With thorough planning and monitoring, TBG’s domain change was a net positive for both brand clarity and SEO.
