Fidelity Bank: A Compliant, High-Speed Rebuild for Retail Banking
Client: Fidelity Bank
Industry: Banking / Financial Services
Timeline: 2021
Services: Custom WordPress Development, API Integration, WCAG Accessibility, GDPR Compliance, Performance Optimization, Technical SEO
The Challenge
For a bank, the website is a branch. It is where customers check hours, find locations, explore products, and decide whether to walk in the door. Fidelity Bank’s legacy site was failing that role: sluggish to load, dependent on a stack of third-party plugins, and built on a foundation that made every update slower and riskier than it needed to be.
Banking also raises the stakes in a way most industries don’t. Accessibility is not a nice-to-have when customers depend on your site to manage their money, and privacy regulation applies to the website just as it applies to the institution. The rebuild had to deliver speed and compliance together, not one at the expense of the other.
The Approach
- A fully custom WordPress theme replaced the plugin stack. On a bank website, every third-party plugin is a performance drag, a maintenance burden, and a piece of someone else’s code on a security-sensitive property. Building the functionality directly into a custom theme eliminated those dependencies and cut load times at the source.
- Custom API integrations for branch locations and hours. Rather than maintaining branch details by hand across pages, I built secure integrations that sync location and hours data automatically — one source of truth, always current. Accurate, structured branch data is also exactly what local search runs on: customers searching for a nearby branch get answers that are right every time.
- WCAG and GDPR compliance engineered in at the code level. Semantic markup, keyboard navigability, and accessible patterns were built into the theme itself rather than patched on afterward, and the site’s data handling was engineered to GDPR standards.
- Database efficiency and a technical SEO framework rounded out the rebuild, so the fast, compliant site was also one search engines could fully read and rank.
The Results
The rebuild transformed a sluggish legacy system into a fast, modern web experience. Load times dropped significantly, branch information now updates automatically across the site, accessibility and privacy compliance are structural rather than retrofitted, and the technical SEO foundation maximizes the site’s search visibility and organic reach.
Key Takeaways
In banking, compliance and performance are the same project. Retrofitting accessibility or privacy onto a finished site is expensive and fragile. Building both into the architecture from day one is faster, safer, and permanent.
Fewer plugins means fewer risks. Custom-coding core functionality removed the performance cost and the security exposure of a third-party plugin stack — a trade worth making on any site where trust is the product.
Structured branch data is a local search asset. When locations and hours flow from a single synced source, the site earns something valuable: local search results that are never wrong.
