The Challenge
Verdesian sells a broad portfolio of plant health products, organized into five categories (nutrient management and efficiency technologies, nutritionals and micronutrients, seed treatments and inoculants, crop health chemistry and biologicals, and soil surfactants), each with its own crop and agronomic information. Their audience of farmers, retailers, and distributors uses the web as the primary source for initial product research, often from the field on a phone. By the time of the rebuild the site was already busy: Verdesian’s own Verdesian 360 newsletter for November 2021 reported almost 245,000 users and more than 300,000 sessions over the preceding year, with the SEED+ GRAPHITE product page alone drawing 156,778 page views. The existing site ran on a restrictive custom build that made the catalog slow to load and awkward to maintain, and the marketing team needed to publish product pages, campaign landing pages, and news without a developer in the loop.
The Approach
- A bespoke WordPress theme built from the ground up replaced the previous build. Clean architecture and semantic HTML cut the markup weight, and the product catalog was modeled properly so every product page shares one fast, consistent structure.
- Performance engineered in, not bolted on: optimized asset loading, image delivery, and caching, with Core Web Vitals treated as a requirement rather than a report.
- A technical SEO foundation for a catalog that lives on organic search: crawlable category and product architecture, clean headings, and structured product information search engines can read.
- Custom administrative functionality so the Verdesian team can manage products, categories, campaigns, and news on their own.
The Results
Load times dropped significantly, Core Web Vitals improved, and the team gained a site they could run themselves. The search results have compounded since. Semrush data shows vlsci.com ranking for about 1,060 keywords with an estimated 2,700 monthly organic visits in October 2022, the month the new theme went live. By August 2026 the same site ranked for roughly 3,700 keywords and drew an estimated 14,600 organic visits a month: three and a half times the keywords and more than five times the traffic, on a theme that has now been in production for four years. For a B2B agtech catalog, that is the job: fast, findable product pages that farmers and retailers actually use.
Key Takeaways
Catalog sites live or die on structure. One well-built product template, repeated hundreds of times, beats hundreds of hand-built pages for speed, consistency, and search.
Mobile-first is not optional for a field audience. When your customers research from a tractor cab, every second of load time is a lost reader.
Give the marketing team the keys. Custom admin workflows mean campaigns and product updates ship on the marketing calendar, not the development backlog.
