Factors such as server uptime, resource allocation, and customer support play a crucial role in determining the speed and reliability of your website. Opt for a hosting provider known for its excellent performance and reliability. I prefer WP Engine, but SiteGround is a good alternative if you have a tight budget. Be sure to consider these factors when choosing your hosting provider.

Uptime

Look for providers that offer a high uptime guarantee (ideally 99.9% or higher) to ensure your website remains accessible to visitors. Any downtime can have detrimental effects on business operations, such as loss of potential sales and damage to brand reputation.

Gzip Compression

Gzip compression reduces the size of your website’s files before they are sent to the visitor’s browser, resulting in faster page loading times. Most modern web servers support Gzip compression, so pick one that does. If you use your own custom server or AWS, be sure to enable this feature.

Backup and Restore Options

Check if the hosting provider offers regular backups and easy restoration options to protect your website data in case of accidents or emergencies. There are plugins that can backup your site for you, however server side backups are preferable as backup plugins will slow down your site.

Security Features

Ensure the hosting provider offers robust security measures such as firewalls, malware scanning, DDoS protection, and SSL certificates to safeguard your website and data.

Choose a hosting provider that allows you to easily upgrade or downgrade your hosting plan as your website's needs change over time.

TIP 3 to improve site speed

Utilize Caching Plugins

Caching plugins are indispensable for speeding up WordPress websites by storing static versions of your website’s pages and serving them to visitors, reducing server load and load times. WP Rocket is hands down my favorite caching plugin, offering significant performance improvements with minimal effort. WP Rocket can also be configured to work on servers that don’t support .htaccess.  Popular caching plugins like W3 Total Cache or WP Super Cache are also easy to install and configure if you prefer a free option. (It should be noted that neither of those free plugins can be used on WP Engine hosting.)

Targeted Refinements

For website performance improvements on a page-by-page basis, I’d recommend Perfmatters, which allows users to disable unnecessary features, scripts, or styles to improve loading speed on a granular scale. The configuration for Perfmatters is more time-consuming but can be vital if you have an old site with too many plugins.

TIP 4 to improve site speed

Optimize & Lazy Load Images

Large images can significantly slow down your website’s load times. If you are not using a custom theme, it’s best to upload images that are already resized and compressed. Images should be 72ppi and sized appropriately, likely never more than 2000px wide.

Take a look at the average desktop screen sizes in the US over the last 12 months for reference.

Optimizing WordPress Images

Optimize images by compressing them without compromising quality using tools like Smush or Imagify. Additionally, use the appropriate image formats (JPEG, PNG, or WebP) and dimensions to further reduce file sizes and improve loading speed. WordPress 5.8+ supports WebP format by default. However, if you have images that are not being converted by WordPress,  you still have options. Both Smush and Imagify can serve WebP images to browsers that support them for faster loading times and improved performance.

Lazy Loading WordPress Images

Any images below the fold, should be lazy loaded. WordPress 5.4+ includes lazy loading by default for images. This means any image placed in the block editor or in a WYSIWYG via the ‘Add Media’ button will be lazy loaded. However, this also means that you could be lazy loading images above the fold, which will actually hurt your site speed. Minimize HTTP Requests

Each element on your website, including images, scripts, and stylesheets, requires an HTTP request to load. Minimize these requests by combining and minifying CSS and JavaScript files, reducing the number of plugins, and using CSS sprites to combine multiple images into a single file.
